Imagine this guy’s surprise when he thought he was stealing a regular car, just to find out that it was an unmarked police car. It must have been too much for him to handle, as it didn’t take long for him to crash it!
Leon Perrymond, 25, is now facing a number of charges, including grand theft auto and aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer.
Based on information in the arrest report, it appears that a detective was working traffic detail and parked his police car in the median of a popular area where people try to make illegal left turns. The emergency lights were left on and the police insignias were displayed on the bumper.
Doesn’t sound like it was impossible to realize it was a cop car to us!
Despite that, while the detective was directing traffic, Perrymond, who is homeless, got into the car, made a U-turn, and took off. The detective briefly caught up with the car in traffic, opened the door and told Perrymond to stop, which he didn’t. Soon, the detective was forced to let go as Perrymond was able to speed away.
With emergency lights flashing, Perrymond drove recklessly, forcing pedestrians to jump out of the way to avoid being hit.
Another police officer in the area caught up with Perrymond, but when Perrymond quickly hit the breaks, the detective’s car slammed into the back of the stolen car, where Perrymond drove off again at a high rate of speed.
Eventually, he lost control of the car and crashed into several parked vehicles. Perrymond was taken to the hospital for precautionary measures, than taken straight to jail!
He is currently being held in the local jail on a $20,000 bond.
